Top 5 Dog Friendly Hikes in Boulder

These are my top 5 favorite hikes to do with my dog in Boulder.

Boulder County is a paradise for pups who love the outdoors. Whether your dog prefers a gentle stroll near a creek or a rolling climb through a pine forest, these easy to moderate friendly trails deliver scenic views and plenty of sniffing opportunities.  Easy to moderate depends on your own skill level and opinion.  Search the web for more information on any of these trails.

All of these trails are off-leash friendly (with Voice & Sight tag).

Before heading out, it is important to note that the City of Boulder allows dogs off-leash only if they display a registered Voice and Sight city tag. Without this specific tag, your dog must always remain on a standard physical leash.

1. Bobolink Trail  (flat, no incline trail)

  • Distance: 2.5 miles out-and-back

  • The Experience: This flat, partially shaded path hugs South Boulder Creek. It features designated creek access points where your dog can safely splash around and cool off on hot days.

2. Eagle Trail at Boulder Valley Ranch

  • Distance: 3.2 miles

  • The Experience: This is a multi-use trail, so expect bikers and equestrians. Not much elevation gain but there are a few steep hills. Wildflowers, a lake and wildlife including lots of prairie dogs.  Not much shade here so go early in the day.

3. Sanitas Valley Trail

  • Distance: 1.2 miles

  • The Experience: A wide, gravel-packed path running up a sun-drenched valley. It is heavily populated with other dogs, making it ideal for social pups who love to greet friends.  (No shade here so go on a cool day).

4. Shanahan Ridge Trail

  • Distance: 4.2-mile loop

  • The Experience: Tucked away in South Boulder, this trail features a steady, muscle-burning climb through a beautifully shaded pine forest. It is significantly less crowded than other central hubs.

5.  The People’s Crossing

This hike has been my favorite this year and I’ve taken my dog Ivy at least 12 times since March.  It’s a straight up hike for 20 minutes so we get some good cardio. Once at the top we sit and enjoy the view for 20 minutes then hike down for 15 minutes. Done in under an hour!

  • Distance: 1.2 miles

  • The experience:  The Peoples' Crossing Trailhead provides access to the network of Red Rocks Trails. These trails climb up into ochre-colored sandstone spires and formations. From the summit, you'll have a beautiful view of the city of Boulder below.

Tips for the Trail

  • Bring extra water and a collapsible bowl for your pup.

  • Always pack out your dog's waste bags.

  • Check trailheads for seasonal wildlife closures before you go.

I’d love to hear where you love to hike with your dogs - anywhere in Boulder County - so write back and let me know!
