Vintage Photos - Part 2
Here’s another post from my vintage photo project, “The Road to Sunrise”. This is the story about the vintage photo negative collection I found in a Denver antique store and have been restoring them over the past several years. You can read that story here.
This post focuses on the many pets that were photographed by our photographer, Edward Alexander Millar, Jr. during the 1930’s in Coronado, CA. It appears that the family had at least one dog, maybe two.
The first dog is black and his name was Captain Harvey, also referred to as Cappy. He is featured in many photos including numerous family group photos and he is often seen with the matriarch of the family as well as with the Geary boys. There is another dog named Budweiser who appears in their yard and at the Sunrise Mining Camp in Joshua Tree. He may have belonged to the family or possibly a friend that was involved in the mining project.
Several cats make appearances - a black kitten named Nicky Morris and another cat referred to as “Yellow Cat on Front Porch”. Perhaps he was visiting from a nearby house. A tabby is in a couple of photographs inside the house (pictures not included in this post). Two more dogs appear in separate photos, obviously posed for a portrait on a stool, one wearing a hat. Both of these dogs belonged to Mrs. Bevaus, who I assume is a family friend.
As a pet photographer I especially appreciate the photos of these pets and that they were included in the photo collection.
I hope you enjoy these photos of the pets from 1930’s Coronado, CA!
All four of these photos are of Captain Harvey. In the photo on bottom right, Captain Harvey is with The Geary Boys.
Top Left: Black Kitten is “Nicky Morris”. “Yellow Cat on Front Porch”. Bottom Left: “Summer 1937”, (Captain Harvey with Fanny Millar). Bottom Right: “Captain Harvey”. I love Captain Harvey’s leather studded harness!
Top Left: “Bonnie Boy, Mrs. Beavau’s Boston Terrier”. Top Right: “Wong Chi. Mrs. Beavau’s Peke”. Bottom Left: Captain Harvey with family member on beach. Bottom Right: “Mrs. Sorley and Datu at La Huerta”.
Top Left: “Dog and Moose Pictures” (Moose refers to the Moose Mine. The photo of Budweiser here was taken in front of a shed at the mining camp.), Top Right: “Budweiser”, Bottom Left: “Budweiser”, Bottom Right: “J.A. Blessing and Group of 3” (J.A. Blessing is the gentleman in white shirt on left. Obviously the dog is Budweiser.)
